Reset network setting way too often!!!

I have been using iPhone since 3GS now have a 6S. IOS 9.3.1

There is an issue that has become very clear to me.

In order to keep your iphone connecting to wifi properly, you have to reset network settings way too often!!!

Many times I have rebooted router, and the real issue is the ios wifi connection is all screwed up and reset network settings is the real option to correct connection issues. I'm talking about speed tests that go from 26 meg down to 2 on wifi, and standing 4 feet from the router.

Reset network settings , and instantly solid connection at 26 meg, and repeatable over and over. It's not the router, as so many people suggest doing when you have connection issues, most of the time it's the iPhone.

It seems like the software erodes it's connection properties and doesn't work properly anymore except for reset network settings.

I appreciate that the reset network settings is available, as things would be really screwed up without it.

I could understand having to do this once in a while, say every few months or so, but at least weekly,or sometimes within a few days is way too often!!!

There has got to be something wrong in the software for this issue to be so prominent.

Thanks for your time

Dan

I have had the iPhone for at least 7 years if not longer - probably reset network setting less times than that -

Does the issue happen only in one location or is it more pervasive?

Here the usual steps I have found help with WiFi issues - sounds like you have tried most already

Please perform the following actions and after each one test to see if the problem is resolved - if so then you can omit the following steps - I have tried to list them in order of increasing effort at least on a Mac and / or an iDevice

  1. Check to see if the problem is isolated to one device and if other devices connect normally -
  2. If the answer to 1 is "yes" - try to connect the affected device in another location if possible - café or university
  3. Perform a forced restart - this does not delete or purge any data and troubleshoots many issues - here is how - Hold down the Off/On and Home buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Allow normal boot up.
  4. Settings - WiFi - <network name> - Click on forget the network - do a forced restart as per 3 and then add the network again
  5. If at home - reboot the router by unplugging for 60 seconds from the AC (mains) and then plug it back in - obviously this step cannot be done in a public place as a café/airport or university. While you are at it - make sure your router is operating on the latest firmware (check manufacturer site)
  6. Settings - General - Reset - Reset Network Settings - remember to have WiFi passwords handy since this erases stored WiFi passwords
  7. If this is a net new device especially in your home - make sure the router is giving enough DNS numbers to accommodate everything that needs / wants a connection - stuff like the printer, Chromecast get overlooked - ask for details about this if not sure
  8. Backup the device to iTunes - Restore as NEW (not from backup) - see if problem resolves - if yes - restore backup
  9. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

Just an FYI, I have owned only one iPhone, my current phone, the iPhone 5s. It will be three years old in September. I have never had to reset the network settings on the phone once. It connects just fine to every network that I have ever tried connecting with including my home network, my network at work, ad hoc networks that I have created on my Macs, the two Verizon MIFI hotspots that I have owned, many public WiFi networks, and Xfintiy WiFi hotspots all of the place.

Okay mostly it's my home wifi as that's where I use wifi most so don't have opportunity to evaluate others long enough.

I have a 2.4 router and 5g router extender from my ISP. The 2.4 was even recently replaced but the problem persists.

The routers are Actiontec, the only router my ISP supplies.

I've tried just about every fix, but still the only one that seems to fix connection most of the time is Reset network settings. That's why I keep thinking it has to be the phone.

Thanks

ChevyGuy, I used to have that same issue with an iPhone 4. Finally I bought a new router after working with Apple Support. just to have the same issue pop up again. After many calls to my internet provide, one IT person shared to unplug and disconnect my wireless router for three minutes once a month. It allows the upgrades from the provider to go through when reboots. It's not the same as just pushing the little reset button on the router. Now if I have issues, it's the first thing I try. Oh and the smaller router is happily doing its job at my folks!
