4th generation apple tv not working after using older version on apple tv

The remote that came with my 4th generation apple tv died and was plugged in to charged. I pulled out my older remote from a previous model to see if it would work and sure enough it did. Now that my remote has finished charging, it will not communicate with my apple tv. I know that is is charged because it is still controlling the volume on my sound bar. Any help is much appreciated.
