Microphone won't connect to Macbook Air

Hi, I just got a Macbook Air and have been having trouble getting any mic to connect to it.

I have a mic connected to a preamp (Tube ultra gain Mic100), which is then connect into an adapter (http://www.cablechick.com.au/cables/4-pole-trrs-to-35mm-stereo-mic-adapter-male- to-2x-female.html). From what I've read of other similar posts from a while ago this should be enough to get the mic to register but all that shows up in the options is the internal mic. The mic works fine on my windows PC, but I want to use Garageband. Please help!
