Q: Cannot AirPlay audio to ATV 3rd Gen

In addition to an ATV connected to my TV, I have three Airport Expresses in other rooms. From my iPad, if I want to AirPlay audio, for example music or content from the BBC Radio app, when I "flick up" from the bottom of the screen and select AirPlay I can see my iPad, my ATV and all Airport Expresses. Although the audio will play to all the AEs if I select ATV, a tick appears but the sound immediately jumps back to the iPad. There is no way I can get the sound through the ATV. Mirroring makes no difference either.

Amy ideas please? Thanks.

    What version ATV, what software?

Is AirPlay enabled on ATV? It probably is, or it wouldn't appear in the menu.

Is ATV on the same WiFi network as iPad?

Are ATV and TV both turned on?

You should check the steps described here Get help with AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Did it use to work, or has it failed recently?

These symptoms seem to indicate that ATV cannot connect to the stream. It tries and fails, so it tells iPad that it cannot handle it. Check the ATV network settings, to be sure it has a good internet connection. Confirm that ATV can play other streams from the internet.

Check that you have not enabled AirPlay access restriction on ATV.

    Firstly, thanks for your response.

    To answer your points:-

    Software 7.2.1 (8011). Model A1469. Not too sure if it's a 2nd or 3rd Gen, think third.

Yes it is enabled and shown as on in settings. Also further down under "speakers" it is the first in the list and ticked. Below this are my Airport Expresses also shown.

The network indicated is the same as my iPad and all other devices. Signal strength is full.

    ATV & TV are on.

    Checked link you provided.

Yes it did work, played a video from Youtube on the TV via Airplay about a week or so ago.

Checked also that not only does no audio play such as music from my iPad or BBC Radio on the ATV, neither does video including the from the BBC iPlayer.

Each time I select ATV from the Airplay list the tick moves immediately up to the iPad in the list.

BTW, checked iPod Touch and that won't connect either.

Checked restrictions, no problem there, so I'm stuck!

I'm reluctant to do a restore because of the hassle setting up again.

    Thanks again.

I assume BBC Radio is an app in your iPad. I guess your AirPort Expresses show up as speakers in the list of AirPlay choices. I suspect that the app is programmed to provide service only on the device on which it is running. The AirPort "speakers" are treated as acceptable receivers, similar to bluetooth speakers. But ATV is a full-function AirPlay receiver, and the app implementer has blocked transferring the stream to it. There may be no way around this. The BBC iPlayer is probably in the same boat. Here in USA, we have this problem with cable TV providers. They sell a "TV on the go" service that lets you watch on mobile devices. But they block AirPlay to Apple TV, because you should be using their set-top box for a TV. They don't want to compete with themselves...

Can you now AirPlay a YouTube video to ATV?

When you say you cannot AirPlay music from iPad, what is the source of the music, and what app are you using?

Is your ATV 3 software the updated build 12H523? You may be experiencing a problem introduced with the update.

In case it's a copy protection issue, you should disconnect and reconnect your TV HDMI cable at both ends. Are you using the ATV optical output, or are you getting sound through the TV?

If all else fails, this may be a bug that you should report here http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html

You might also search this site for other similar problems.

Love your name by the way. All hail Brian!

Hi again, I don't know what build my ATV is, can't see any mention of build in Settings "About".

As it stands at the moment I can't play anything via my ATV. The music is played on my iPad via "Music" app as I subscribe to Apple Music, so all my music is there. Also Spotify tracks will play through the AEs but not on the ATV.

Connection is via HDMI to TV the via optical from TV to Sonos Playbar.

Nothing has changed recently to explain this as I said before it used to work OK.

Will report this via the link, thanks for that. Will "Google " the problem some more!

Can't believe it! The old trick worked. Unplugged ATV from power, plugged it in again and it works fine via Airplay.

    Thanks for the advice, appreciated.
