Deactivate an old mail account = how to with easy access to mail

Hi,

I have an old email account (no longer hosted) but daily have to look back over emails sent/received.

Mac Mail is continually asking for the password - it's crashed (a lot) and causing issues.

So... I tried:

1. Moving the mail to On My Mac

2. Selecting Deactivate within settings/internet accounts/mail - the mail account

BUT... here's the hitch... it still keeps asking for the password!

How can I stop mac mail searching / pulling/pushing email from this account?

Thanks 🙂

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

From the Mail menu bar, please select

Window ▹ Connection Doctor

Look for the disused SMTP (outgoing mail) account in the window that opens. Double-click it. Another window will open, showing a list of all the outgoing mail accounts. The unwanted one will be selected. Make a note of the settings in case you change your mind. Click the minus-sign button to delete it, then click OK.

If there's more than one unwanted account, repeat.
