i have never heard it run. i was not the original owner i have only had it for about 6 months
Fans can be quiet. Apple is very good about supporting units, usually only refusing service after 5-ish years (obsolete) or if you do stupid things like fullydisassemble-customise-fullyreassemble. If you have questions, let the Genius Bar give you a *free* evaluation.
When you start running resource intensive application that will make the CPU/GPU to get hot and create heat, the fans will increase speed in order to dissipate the heat and then you will start noticing them. That usually will be expected and normal. Games, video rendering and Skype are typical examples when the fans will be audible.
