Q: Multiple errors in Final Cut Studio. Do I just need to reinstall it all?

Hi, I've been tolerating lots of errors in my Final Cut Studio editing for a while now but I've decided to try and fix them because they are really getting in the way, I have listed them below...

1.      I often get 'out of memory' errors, particularly when rendering. Often I simply close Final Cut and re-open it, then when I render it works fine. Ideally I'd like to not get the errors at all though. Any suggestions?

2.      I use text in my videos, I often put the date at the start. I use some plugin text generators which I like. These have worked fine for a while but lately occasionally the text randomly goes into random numbers and letters, see image below, this was supposed to read 'February 2016'...

Again, I work around it, I'll usually just replace the text asset and it works but I'd rather not encounter the error at all, please advise.

3.      Sometimes, usually whilst I'm exporting with compressor, final cut pro will just suddenly stop, no warning or error message, it will just close itself and I'll lose any unsaved work. I work around this but just saving often but again it's a problem I could do without. This also crashes the export, so I'll have to start again.

4.      As well as the above issue, sometimes the export crashes in compressor without final cut crashing at all. It just stops exporting and it says General Error: 0.

5.      I also often get a message which reads 'General error' when I'm using Final Cut, I think this might be associated with the text plugins again but I'm not entirely sure. Usually when I close Final Cut and re-open it, the error goes away.

My plan is to uninstall and re-install Final Cut Studio but I'm just posting this here to find out if anyone can shed some light.

Also, I have lots of presets which I don't want to lose in Final Cut Studio, so I'd rather not uninstall but if I do have to uninstall, I'd like to know what I need to do to keep my presets e.g. export settings in compressor.

I know this is quite a big post but any help is really appreciated, thanks.

    1. This error can happen if you have formats on the timeline FCP doesn't like, like H.264 or MP4...basically any non-FCP editing codec. ALSO...this can happen if you have any stills that are larger than 4000 pixels.

    2. what plugin text generators are you using? And there was no image below.

3 & 4....I see you are running OS 10.9.5. The last fully supported OS for FCP 7 was 10.6.8. Every OS version after that goes further away from full support and full operability. That being said, I still use FCP 7 on my machine running 10.9.5, but I lost funtionality...Motion and Compressor and Qmaster no longer work.   So right there that's the issue with sending to Compressor...Compressor 3.5 that shipped with FCP doesn't work on 10.9.5.  You'll have to get the latest version...but then FCP cannot SEND TO Compressor with that version, so you'll have to export a file and then compress it.

    5. That also can be related to media format used in the project, and stills over 4000 pixels.

Hi, the text generator is called 'Monotype 1.1.1'.

So with so solution for 3 & 4, I could export to a quicktime and then take that into compressor.

Or, would it be possible to roll my OS X back to version 10.6.8 for the time being?

    Which would you suggest?

Thank so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Sorry, I mean motype! Looks like it's part of FXFactory.

I wonder if the issues here are compatibility too, with the updating of os x.

I think I'm going to try and roll back to snow leopard. My boot disk is separate, so I should think it would be quite easy to do, even if I lose the data.

    Please advise, thanks.

Ah, yeah, contact FX FACTORY and see what assistance they can offer.

And there is no "rolling back the OS."  The only way to get back to an older OS is to erase the hard drive and install from scratch. If you do this, backup ALL of your files first...perhaps clone the current drive.  But yeah, the only way is a clean slate.  Perhaps a separate drive? If you have a tower that supports multiple hard drives.
