Verification Apple ID failed

I would imagine you don't have international data turned on. Did you contact your carrier before you left, or purchase a SIM in your local country? To verify this is the case, try connecting to WiFI at a hotel or restaurant, I bet they both work.

With no access to Internet data, nothing will work. As already suggested, get the device connected to a WiFi hotspot and test. If that resolves the issue, you will need a locally usable SIM (or international data on your cell account) to do the things you want to do while you are away from WiFi.

EDIT: Just saw your most recent post. Check with your carrier to ensure that you didn't exceed some sort of data or cost limit by using the data service over the last couple of weeks.

The activation of iMessage usually "calls home" to Apple servers - some of which are located in the UK - so if your international plan covers data you should be ok

Settings - Messages - what does the notation under iMessage say? Does it say Waiting for Activation?
