How do I enter a command in Terminal?

I am looking to change the internal date for a ML upgrade download. When I did some research, I found out the reason I can no longer use the copy I made of it to have in case I lost my setup [which is the case now]. When I tried to use it, it said that it was corrupted. Research said that if I changed the internal date, it would still work. The directions were to access the Terminal from the "install" and to then enter a command. I am stymied to know how I can access Terminal from the "install" and also am unsure how to enter a command in Terminal. I know how to access Terminal in the Utilities folder. Can anyone give me some help for this?

Mac OS X (10.6.8)
