Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

A second "Macintosh HD" icon appeared on my desktop.

This morning I inadvertently unplugged my external HD and got the usual alert saying it was unplugged incorrectly that I should have unmounted it first, etc... But immediately afterward a 2nd HD icon appeared on my desktop, right below the HD icon that is always there. I can't open the 2nd one... I get this message: "The folder “Macintosh HD” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."

The original icon can be opened normally.

I can't trash the 2nd icon or eject it. It's not an alias. It looks identical to the original icon.

This is the contradictory info I get when I click Get Info:

Anyone ever experience this or know what to do? Thanks.

Hi David, the one in the Screenshot has 0k on it, so that seems to be the bogus one.

First let's check in /Volumes. At the command copy/paste this command cd /

Press return key

Then copy/paste this command

ls / Volumes

Press return

The bogus one will look like a folder.

Now shutdown your Mac, disconnect the external drive and boot back up.

If things are back to normal, erase the back up and create a new backup.

A second "Macintosh HD" icon appeared on my desktop.
