Using AFP protocol to access a Synology NAS. When viewing a PDF or Word document the 'Date Modified' date changes. Synology technical support claims it's an Apple AFP protocol bug. Is there a fix for this issue?

OS X is using real Apple File Protocol (AFP), and Synology is using an open source variation of AFP. Any surprise that Synology would point their finger at Apple?
Are you current with the Synology DSM software updates? I just looked at the creation date of a shell script on my mounted Synology drive. Then opened it and saved it again in Sublime Text 3. The Modified, and Last opened dates did not change. I have DSM 5.2-5644 update 5 installed.
