hello there,
does anyone one know if you can password protect documents and spreadsheets in Excel and Word for iPad? I am using free version. If not, is there another way to protect contents of documents on iPad?

Not just for certain apps but you can setup a passcode which protects everything on your iPad.

Have you considered using Apple's Pages and Numbers?
