Keyboard all jarbled when replying to text messages

When I try and reply to a text message from the lock screen and sometimes when I reply to a text message when my phone is already unlocked - the keyboard goes all jumbled and the text is all garbled. I can't switch to another keyboard delete the garbled text because the keys are all over the place. Closing the text message app and reopening it sometimes works but not all the time. I have an iphone 5 16GB with 8.0 installed along with the apple keyboard but my default keyboard is the paid version of Swype. I've spent hours trying to find the solution online myself but it's like finding a needle in a haystack - lots of macbook and imac issues and issues on android but finding anyone else with a similar iphone issue and a fix has not been easy. I did a full restore of my phone last week and it did not fix the issue. I am concerned about installing 9.x but will if I have to. Any assistance would be appreciated.
