Using apple headphones on macbook pro?

I use my apple earbuds for a mic when video conferencing on my computer. But I have come to realize if the room is quiet it often sounds thicker and better to use the laptop mic instead, ala just using headphones, not apple branded.

I went to system pref and see no option to use the built in laptop over the mic line.
