Hi guys! First time posting here, sorry if this is a newb question hah... but can you text with non iPhone users from a mac that is linked to ur iPhone?? I've been able to txt w/ contacts that use an iPhone as well, but keeps failing on others...

That is the expected behavior if you're using the Messages program on the Mac. It can only send out IP-based messages: iMessages, Jabber, Google Talk, Yahoo!, etc. Not cellular-based SMS/MMS messages.
You can exchange text messages with third-party phones in Messages on a Mac via your iPhone. Please follow the instructions in this support article, under the heading
Set up SMS and MMS with Continuity
Make sure that at least one email address is enabled on the phone for use with iMessage; otherwise the activation code won't appear.
Thanks guys for the help, the only step I was missing was turning bluetooth on my iPhone on and setting up sms mms forwarding lol XD
