I am a Logic Pro X user and never use Garageband. I see there is an update for Garageband in Apps Update but don't want to waste space on my hard disk.
Can I easily delete Garageband by just deleting it from the applications folder?

Yes, deleting the application from Applications will uninstall it.
There is also content in the folder /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/
The subfolder "Instrument Library" is shared with GarageBand, but you may want to delete the other folders - ChordTrainer, Learn to Play, Magic GarageBand, that need a lot of space.
I'd keep a backup, just in case you may change your mind.

If GarageBand is showing on your Purchases tab at the App Store, yes.
But it would be much saver to keep a copy of the GarageBand application on a backup drive. Then you can simply put it back, if you want to reinstall it.
Can I just backup the application, or do I also have to backup all the files in the support folder and things like apple loops, or will they automatically be reinstalled when I put the app back?
If you can reinstall GarageBand from the AppStore, it will reinstall the sounds and loops of the current version. Loops and sounds that came with previous versions of GarageBand will not be reinstalled. I'd make a full backup of your Mac - you need it anyway.
