Q: dual card setup

Hi guys, I have a Mac Pro 2008  8 core 2.8ghz 32gb ram running a 1TB RAID 0 El Captian with a 2600XT (APPLE) and a HD5870 ( non APPLE ).  My question is how do these cards function ? I want a dual monitor setup, but i also want the boot screen so i can trouble shoot. If i put one tft to one card and the other tft to the other, how will it perform ? Will Photoshop only work better on the screen with the better card ? Sorry but used to SLi in windows. Any help or guidance on this would be most helpful.

I think graphics output intensive apps like games will perform better when displayed via the 5780 card.

    Only a Mac flashed card will show a boot screen. It sounds like the HD5870 is not a Mac flashed card.

    Some functions/effects in Photoshop can use a graphics card for processing and thus speed up that function.

    The 2600XT is not supported I think and per the following

    the HD5670 will not help much if any in CS4 and later

     

    The 2600 XT can support two monitors by itself

    Hi, Thanks for replying. My first post is always garbled and never really gets to my real aim. I know my 5870 does not contain a mac refi,  what i mean is in the picture, if i run a graphic based app on the right screen with the HD5870, will i get better performance than if i ran the app on the left screen (2600XT) ?     Or does this not matter as long as the app knows which card to use for extra processing power ?

    Hi, sorry it took a while, thanks for your reply much appreciated. On another note, my mac is rebooting when i run valley unigine , the fan on the gfx card gradually steps up and after about 5 mins the system blacksreens on one tft and grey stripes on the other then reboots. I don't get any artefacts on screen through daily use and is fine when running photoshop etc the fan is silent. I applied new paste and cleaned out card but still does it. I run the demo on full extreme hd settings. The error report is this is you can make any sense out of it. Thanks to anyone who can shed any light on this.

    The reports also lists that you are not using ECC (error correcting code) memory.

    Open the side cover and see if any light are lit by the memory slots. The memory in the 2006-2008 Mac Pros run hot and frequently fail with time.

    Hi lllaass, Thanks for responding so quick.  I was thinking it was to do with my graphics card, but this proves otherwise. I have new ram coming this week so hopefully this will sort out problem, the ram i have all have the ridiculously large heatsinks on them so i will apply to new ones when they arrive. Can you recommend any good memory testing software i could use to double check ? there are no lights on but thats not to say it isn't faulty, still new to all this mac scene so please forgive my ignorance.

    Hi lllaass,

     

    I have replaced ram, although the fan seems to kick in after about 2-3mins the unigine software demo ( everything set to max @ 1920x1080) drops to around 5 fps from 30fps. Then sometimes will crash, i am guessing the card is on its way out ? Although i can run photoshop, z brush, blender all ok ( although i haven't done anything intensive yet) .
