Why wont the spinning pinwheel go away? And word keeps crashing

I have a macbook pro osx 10.6.8

rainbow pinwheel pops up ALL the time and stays up for SO long. I have deleted all mvoies, everything besides some music, photos, and my documents and I dont know what to do I always get the pinwheel. Now the one thing I need to use on this computer (microsoft word) keeps crashing and getting the 'send error report' message. I have restarted over and over and over. I don't know what to do. I need these documents. Someone please help
