Maps app - how to close directions pane (Left) without clearing the blue route highlight on the map. iOS 9.2

Apple’s native “Maps” app iOS 9.2.1 –Once I've entered an origin & destination I want to be able to close the directions pane (on the left) without clearing the route. I want to be able to just see the blue highlighted overview route without losing half the screen space to the textural directions. I do not want to shift to the 3D route view that you get once you “start” your directions. Thanks for any help.

Partial answer

While I could not find any way to narrow or eliminate the directions column

Clicking on the i at the right bottom brings up a menu where you can toggle between 3D and 2D maps

The vast majority of us on this forum are all end users like you
