I bought a used laptop with it's old user account still logged in. I didn't bother to delete her files, since I assumed it would also delete her files when I delete her account. But it seems her old files are still on this laptop when I checked the storage as I have only used around 20 GB in my account, but says there is 61GB of storage used.
40GB of storage is a waste. Hoping to resolve this issue. Thanks!

Create your account as administrator, then delete whole old user account with System Preferences > Users&Groups.

I've already done that, but somehow I see a big chunk of storage being used despite of how little storage I've used since purchasing this laptop.
ie: my iTunes says I only have 314 mb used, but the total audio files on my storage says 16 gb of audio files and 61gb others(?)
Omni DiskSweeper can show you the precise size and location of all your files. It will inventory your disk starting from the files that take up the most space. It can also give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper.

Yes, lllaass is correct. You do need to wipe the disk and start fresh or you will still be logged in with previous owner's Apple ID.
I was able to change the admin with my apple ID now and have no access to the old user's acct so i was able to update osx.
