why can't Apple show the progress on indexing?

Is there a resaon that Apple keeep taking away useful information from us the users? E.g. if you wish to implement re-indexing, it used to show the progress and be seen as soon as you click on Spotlight and have a small (almost impossible to see) flashing light next to the Spotlight icon on the toolbar. Now in El Capitan you not only have to go through all the rigmarole of adding a drive and removing it in the system preferences Spotlight privacy tab, but now also have to input the word 'indexing' to see if it is actually happening (sometimes it does not actually start and you have to repeat the process) and even then, there is no time duration/ending shown. It is rather like the UK government with car road tax; where you used to get a tax disk and therefore have a reminder when it was due, but now have nothing and have to rely on a postal reminder that may not get to you. It is patronising and remiss to remove indications to users, that a process that the user is involved in, is hidden and does not give accurate information when it is so simply available. From my perspective this all began with the removal of the spinning cog in Mail which still has not bettered, despite numerous tweaks, when the original simply told you what was happening in a simple way and effective way.
