Should I add RAM to my mid 2009 Macbook Pro?

I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro which, since the last 9.3.1 ios update is acting up. It is slow, resorting to the fan sooner and don't ask me about iBooks! I was wondering whether I could improve things by upgrade from 2x2GB ram to 2x4GB ram. Any recommendations?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), Unibody mid 2009

These two things are not related... Macs run OS X and iDevices run iOS - so, the iOS update cannot be the cause of the effect.

More RAM is always better.
