Q: does Photos show if a picture is a duplicate when importing?
I am running El Captain -10.11.4 on my iMac ((27 inch Mid 2010) 3.2 GHz intel Core i3, 16 Gb -and fixed my iPhoto lib (rebuilt & repaired) (iPhoto 9.6.1) before migrating to Photos 1.5. should Photos show if I am importing a duplicate when I import? Also can I delete my iPhoto library after I start using Photos.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, photos will alert you, if you try to import duplicate files. But only, if the duplicates are exact duplicates with the same file attributes. It does not recognize edited versions of the same photo as a duplicate.
And yes, you can delete the iPhoto Library, after you opened it in Photos and created a migrated library. But I would wait, until you are sure, if all photos migrated correctly and the library is working perfectly. Photos is storing the migrated library efficiently, so it does not need much extra storage, even if it has apparently the same size as the original iphoto Library. see this link: Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
