Is my Macbook Pro battery faulty?

I have had my Macbook Pro since 2012. Just lately on switching it on from battery power it has occasionally booted up and then switched itself off for no apparent reason. It did this today and failed to respond to the power switch, eventually bringing up a screen which indicated that I needed to go to mains power. This I did and the laptop booted up as normal. As the battery status indicator at the top of the screen was showing over 40% charged I am wondering if my battery may be developing a fault. Does anyone have any similar experience?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Have you tried resetting the SMC? Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

What does it say in System Information about the battery condition? Does it say "Normal" or "Service" or ???
