The sales tax charged by the iTunes Store is the same as you would pay in a local retail establishment.

In NC, that includes a state tax of 4.75% and a local tax that could bring it up as high as 7.5%.

So on a $9.99 item, it could be up to 75 cents depending on your locality in NC.
