Manually migrate data?

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro, and I would like to manually migrate my data (not programs) from my old MacBook Pro. I have a 4TB Thunderbolt external drive - I just don't know where to find all of my data (pics from my iPhone, pics my daughter took in Photobooth, my documents, etc). Does anyone have a good guide on doing this or a list of directories to copy?

Note: I want to do this because my old MacBook had multiple "experts" install, uninstall, and do custom configurations throughout its life. These people gave me a custom login screen I hate, unknown performance tweaks, and a myriad of problems. I want to get a fresh start with my new MacBook (with my data, of course).
