unix executive video converting

Hi!

I am trying to take a film from a CD-rom to my mac to edit it in iMovie, but the file says executive unix file, and it won't open in iMovie for editing. The DVD is made up of two folders, one called VIDEO_RM with files VIDEO_RM.BUP, VIDEO_RM.DAT, VIDEO_RM.IFO and the other folder called VIDEO_TS with files VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB. When I put the cd-rom into the computer, the film opens and plays in video player. This is a video recording of the family, and not a rip-off movie of some hollywood film don't know if that can say anything about the file type. How can i covert it to a readable format for iMovie?

If someone answers, please answer thoroughly, because I am a noob in these things and THANK YOU!
