I cannot put my key back on my Magic keyboard

I wanted to check if something is stuck inside. I lifted it from the bottom but when I put it back its fully pressed in. Its not lifted, its flat. None of the plastics seem to be broken. Is there a guide or manual how to put the key back?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

There is a takeapart at the iFixit guides site; it may show only a

one-way trip so if you go there be wary of creating a pile of parts

without a roadmap back to an assembled keyboard.

{from what this indicates, the new mechanism is different than

what they had used before; there may be a reseller whose site

has replacement parts for these, or they may be able to locate

the parts should the scissor springs etc need replacement}

Among the retail information, is a section at Apple Store online to

show questions and answers. Not certain if anything related to your

question appeared here; and most seem to have gone w/o replies:

As you likely know, the suggestion to never remove more than a

few keys at a time (when cleaning keyboard) is a safe bet. I've

seen what can happen when too many are removed at once.

This may be helpful, in that iFixit (in the actual take apart guide page, has

video and still images with text) says

"The new keyboard adopts the slightly revised layout of the 2015 MacBook keyboard"

So if it works, the blue words are a link to that iFixit keyboard page. {I've had to re-edit

due to ASC discussions site software failures where URLs fail to render with various

browsers. Presently most of what I've edited (now in both posts) seems to work in

Firefox browser and Safari. Any errors you may experience in that aspect should be

noted in your reply, if they exist or persist while here.}

A direct link to the computer repair guide whose keyboard parts are like Magic Keyboard:

https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Retina_MacBook_2015#guideList

Sometimes the part under the key-face may need to be replaced even if they look OK.

Damages may occur in addition to whatever didn't work before you took the parts out.

And the touch sensor under the spring and keyface may also be the real problem.

This is some of the difficulty; also some 2015 MacBook 12-inch Retina users had noted

issues requiring repair or extensive cleaning of the keyboard. A return of covered product

to an authorized Apple store or service provider is recommended if the unit has failed.

So because these products appear to share some technologies, you may need to go there.

Sorry to not have a specific reply to your question.

In any event...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Some similar issues of keys fitting too tight and sticking partways down

had been noted among those new model Retina 12-inch MacBook (2015/16)

users. Once the keys appear physically different in height there likely is a

need to have some kind of repair. Under AppleCare, they will replace the

entire keyboard assembly; that is a bigger deal and not a DIY process.

Hopefully the Magic Keyboard will be OK for awhile longer; if you bought it

for use with a computer presently under AppleCare you may ask to see if

the keyboard has any additional coverage alongside that of covered Mac.

Good luck! 🙂

All older posts are now past their time for editing, and so they're stuck.

Timely edits may restore correct function of the failed URLs -- or may not.

Reading back through and mousing over blue URL links, with Firefox v 46 (and in v 45) they show the same URL

as this discussion; so if or when I copy the web link even from Apple referenced page URLs, they go to this ASC

discussion instead of original linked content elsewhere. This issue has been reported in general, not each one.

Hopefully the guide links that show how to correctly take the keys off & replace them is helpful, since they do

show certain tools (in newer Retina 12-inch guide, similar key mechanism to recent Magic Keyboard) to use

which should avoid damage to pieces during take-part and inspection. Damages may limit your options when

or if the same product is taken to Apple for inspection regarding repair or replacement under AppleCare.

Just saying, in any case! 🙂
