Q: iMac intermittently drops Internet connection... kinda

Good evening everyone!

I have a mid-2011 iMac running on OS X 10.10.5. A few weeks ago, it started giving me ****. Most of the time, it works just fine. However, once in a while (it can vary from once in a weekend to multiple times a day), it drops the Internet connection... kinda. It is fairly complicated to explain and English is not my mother tongue, so bear with me. Randomly, some websites and domains will just become unaccessible. Reloading webpages does not get me anywhere. All it does is change the error message my browser throws at me. I also cannot access most video games requiring an online connection while my iMac is acting up. Strangely enough, I can still receive and send mails and use applications like Skype or uTorrent. Some websites will also still load. Most of the time, YouTube is completely functional. The same goes for Google's search function, although I cannot load search results when I click on them. Facebook tends to load with an extremely messed up display. I say "most" and "tend to" because it has happened a few times that even these websites would not load. Applications like Skype and Mail have never failed me up to this point. Skype's in-app home page does go down with the drops, though.

I mostly use Chrome, but the problem is also present on Safari. I have no extensions installed on either of these two browsers. The problem is not limited to my user. Other iMacs on the network do not experiment these drops. Rebooting my iMac seems to fix it temporarily. I have tried using other DNS. The issue is extremely intermittent and the length of the "drops" varies from a few seconds to an hour. Here are screenshots of the various errors Chrome gives me (there is no pattern, reload and a different one pops up). I know they are in French, but it's the best I can do. I am truly desperate for help as I will be taking online classes soon.

Thanks in advance,

A lost Mac user ~

uTorrent is your problem.  Relying on illicet software means you may have installed something that hurts your net connection.  Sorry, but you really need to remove all torrent obtained software.  Get software only direct from the developers and the Mac App Store.  Macupdate is good too, but don't ever get Mackeeper.

I don't use softwares obtained from uTorrent. I only use it to torrent cartoon shows from a single reliable source.

It sounds very much like a DNS or a bandwidth problem.  A bandwidth problem could be caused by uTorrent if you have it running and it is sharing out to other torrent users.

As for DNS, give these a try

    OpenDNS.org

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

    Google DNS

    8.8.8.8

    8.8.4.4

I realize you are outside the U.S.  If (AND ONLY IF) you do figure out it is a DNS problem, and OpenDNS or Google DNS are too slow, you could try a DNS performance test to find a better/faster DNS server.  Google "dns performance test" and you should find something to test DNS servers from your location.

OK, I would like to clarify once and for all that the chances of my problem being caused by uTorrent are extremely small. I open it once a week to torrent the latest episode of the show I am watching, seed while I am watching the episode, and then stop and close everything. It is all I do with uTorrent and I have been doing this for much longer than I have had this problem. I do not use illicit softwares and I do not leave it running in the back. I only mentioned it was working because I opened all Internet using apps to see which ones worked and whinch ones didn't in a desperate attempt to understand my problem.

Regarding the DNS problem, it was obviously one of the first things I tried, as it is the only seemingly logical reason for what is happening with my computer. I tried using the two Google DNS and it did not help.

Thank you for your suggestions, but they don't seem to be the solution I need.

It was NOT clear from your previous descriptions that you did not have uTorrent running all the time.  And I did include 'if' in my description.

As to DNS, you have have not specified what you tried, so I figured I would offer up known good reliable fairly fast DNS servers to try.

Something is selectively blocking your access.  Thing that are not under your control are what is being suspected.

Browsers are hit, but other activities work.

Are you using a Proxy server?

    Are you using a VPN?

Are you using an Anti-Virus package?

    Are you using LittleSnitch?

Are you using anything that might look at your web browser traffic, whether installed on your system, or something that is channeling your traffic outside your Mac.

Hey I didn't mean to come across as rude or anything. I know it wasn't clear, which is why I wrote that I wanted to clarify things. ^_^

I am not using any of the things you listed. What troubles me the most about this problem is that it is intermittent, I would say. Testing fixes can take a long time and it also confuses me like crazy. I really don't understand what's going on with my poor iMac.

We are not at the stage of reaching in the dark.

Could you please post the EtreCheck output, so we can look at your configuration

I do not know if it will help or just be more noise.

EtreCheck is running at the moment, but it seems to be in French. I am afraid the results will also be in French. It doesn't give me the option to choose a language. What should I do?

I thought LogMeIn started charging for Hamachi.   Also I thought Hamachi used the 5.n.n.n class A network, which up until a few years ago was unassigned.  However, the 5.n.n.n class A network has been giving out to ISPs, so it is no longer unused IP address space.

If you are not using it, you might consider removing this.

        [désengagé]    com.Belcarra.iokit.USBLAN_netpart (2.0.2 - 2016-04-18) [L’aide]

        [désengagé]    com.Belcarra.iokit.USBLAN_usbpart (2.0.2 - 2016-04-18) [L’aide]

        [désengagé]    com.belcarra.iokit.netpart.panther (1.6.1 - 2006-11-06) [L’aide]

        [désengagé]    com.belcarra.iokit.usbpart.panther (1.6.1 - 2006-11-06) [L’aide]

If I understand the Google serach for belcarra, this is some kind of networking over USB.  I do not know more than that. But if it is hooking itself into the networking stack, it is also possible to interfere with other networking traffic.

You might consider uninstalling this to see if it changes anything.  If you do not use this any longer, most definitely uninstall it

        EyeConnect : Chemin : /Library/StartupItems/EyeConnect

Google says this is a media sharing app for EyeTV.  I'm only calling this out because it uses your network, and at the moment anything using your network is suspect.

LogMeIn has indeed changed, but I haven't used it in a year, so I never bothered to update it. I just uninstalled it, will see if this helps. I also found EyeConnect and will ask my father what it does. If he does not mind, I will attempt to delete it.

However, I have no idea what the heck Belcarra is, and I couldn't find it in /System/Library/Extensions. I am confused.

EDIT: I just deleted EyeConnect. My father said it was a very old thing and he didn't even know why it was still on my computer. I couldn't find Belcarra and he doesn't know about it either. Will keep looking.

EtreCheck seems to think they are at this location:

            /System/Library/Extensions/Belcarra.USBLAN_netpart.kext

            /System/Library/Extensions/Belcarra.USBLAN_usbpart.kext

            /System/Library/Extensions/RemoteControl.USBLAN_usbpart.kext

Then again, EtreCheck also says it is "désengagé" which I assume is French for not active.

I must stress again, I'm just making wild guesses.  If anything, the EtreCheck output might get to to clean up some of the things you accumulated over the years, but no longer use.  A little house cleaning is not a bad thing

Yeah, wild guesses are better than no guesses! ^_^

I found it. I have no idea where I was looking the first time, but I found those three things in Extensions, alongside a bunch of EyeTV thingies. I got rid of that too. I also stopped using Chrome and went back to Safari. Stupid Google Chrome Helper was hogging my CPU cycles. I doubt it would be the cause of my problem, but I realized I had never closed the Chrome app before trying other browsers or apps.
