Mail won't accept hotmail account password and now I can't reinstall the Hotmail account

I "upgraded" to El Capitan recently, and for the last week have been having problems with Mail not recognising my Hotmail account password. I thought it would be a good idea to delete the account and try to reinstall the account, but of course it still won't accept the password so now I am completely stuck, and the other support suggestions don't work when the account isn't there to start with. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I have several email accounts for different purposes and it is most convenient to access them all through Mail
