How do I make an El Capitan boot disk
I have a bootable Flash drive for Yosemite and would like to make one for El Capitan but can't find any directions. Has anyone done a bootable flash drive?

Depending on what you want to do, either use DiskMaker X or clone your existing system to it.

Would this just do El Capitan? I am getting ready to give my older MacBook Pro to my granddaughter and just want to be able to erase the older MacBook and load El Capitan. Or should I just reload with Yosemite?
You should reload it with the newer of its original OS or 10.6.8(or 10.7.5 if you have one of Apple's USB thumbdrives). Anything newer will be tied to your Apple ID and not transferable; she can upgrade the OS from hers.

You can use this set of instructions for creating a bootable flash drive of the OS X El Capitan installer:
