Why won't the battery stay charged in a laptop?

My friend has a Mac 13 inch laptop and the battery didn't stay charged after only a year. We purchaed a new battery on ebay and charged it up but again the battery isn't working Could there be something wrong with the laptop itself?

Is this "Mac 13 inch laptop" the PowerBook G3 shown the equipment profile or a different Mac notebook? It's important we know the exact model because the pre-2006 Mac notebooks this forum covers are hugely different internally that the current Intel-opowered Macs (2006 through present).

If it is Mac older that 5-7 years, taking it to an Apple Store won't help becasue they do not service computers they deem "vintage "or "obsolete" and, for me, they have refused to even "look at" a vintage model--depends on the store. Info here:

I am also concerned about buying a battery off eBay. We have seen a large number of reports here on counterfeit batteries from auction sites sold as genuine Apple parts that are worthless. At best they are used batteries repackaged as "new." At worst they could damage a computer.

Marlys,

We can be of more help if you identify the model and sub-model as I asked in my first response. You can get the model from teh serial number in two ways:

1) Enter the serial number into this Apple support page: https://checkcoverage.apple.com

2) If the computer is too old for the Apple lookup to work, this site works the same but extended support to older Macs:

And again, if this is really a Powerbook and not a MacBook or MacBook Pro, I doubt any Apple Store "genius" will be allowed to look at it, so you proximity to such a store may be a moot point.

In case you hadn't found an authorized service provider in your localized area,

there appears to be one listed in Minot ND according to Apple - Find Locations...

Hopefully you can have your 13-inch MacBook functionality tested, diagnosed, & restored.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
