Q: eMac shutting down almost immediately during boot after HDD replacement

Hey all!

I need to explain a bit for this one, so please bear with me. Thanks.

Long story short, I've had a few eMacs for quite a while now and I recently found a use for them. I set one up (it was running 10.4 with 1GB of RAM and a >1GHz G4 processor, can't remember) and used it for a while before it randomly lost power and refused to stay turned on for more than a few minutes. I tried replacing the PMU battery with one from one of the other Macs and pressing the reset button, which caused it to stop showing any signs of life whatsoever (even after replacing the original battery).

Reasoning that I had bricked it, I got out one of the other Macs with a plan to give it the HDD from the dead one. This new Mac was running 10.5, flawless with another >1GHz G4 processor (but only 768MB of RAM this time). The only oddity I noticed is that the CRT took an unusually long time to warm up, starting off dark with only reds but gradually getting brighter and with more non-red colours. It was about normal 5 minutes after OSX finished booting. Anyway, I proceeded to swap out the HDDs and set everything back up, only to find that again, this new Mac wasn't working!

If it's been a while since the last boot attempt the CRT will make its usual "bong" noise before the machine clicks (sorta like a relay turning off) and nothing else happens. If I try again, the CRT stays silent (presumably it's already warmed up from the last boot attempt?) and you can hear two clicks - One that sounds like something turning on, then the same turning off click from before. These clicks are different lengths apart - usually it's only a few seconds but sometimes it's longer. There's been a few times where the fans started between clicks and I even heard the startup chime on one attempt (that got me excited - but no, it clicked and turned back off again ). The CRT doesn't seem to do anything other than bonging occasionally (but it may be turning on - I can't tell due to the warming-up issue I mentioned before).

I'd really like to be able to resurrect this old Mac again - I have the sneaking suspicion that I broke it while replacing the HDD. I'm pretty darn sure I didn't forget any internal cables, and I tried not to touch anything other than the HDD and the logic board enclosure (ended up needing to remove the fan enclosure too, however). Both Macs are model A1002 and both have serial numbers in the YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx range (eligible for the repair program?). I don't know if they were actually taken in for repair back in the day.

Anyway, I hope you guys can help me out! Thanks in advance!

(P.S The first eMac is well beyond repair. I do also have a third one - is it worth going through the HDD replacement again? It's worth noting that its PMU battery has been sitting on my desk for a while now. It was probably flat anyway.)

Could the HDD be the problem? It sounds that it may be.

See if you can just disconnect the HDD Data cable & try holding alt or option key at bootup/power on.

That repair extension program (REP) has been closed for years. The affected models were made until lMay 2005 and, givens Apple's history of REP administration, a computer would qualify for four years from data of purchase, so that suggests the program expired in 2009.

I worked on one affected eMac that had its original hard drive. It booted normally but shut down as soon as I tried to open any app. Your symptoms sounds very familiar in spite of the added complexity of a hard drive swap-out. If the second hard drive already had a full eMac system installed and it was set to auto-launch some apps at boot, that could the the problem.

Some affected eMacs could be visually verified. The big problem was leaking capacitors. If your eMacs have not been fixed, you will likely see the bad caps though the RAM door. These images show bad eMac caps:

A click is often the down convertor board failing. Maybe the new hard drive with more power draw pushed it over the edge.

Any headway on this issue yet?
