Q: Where is QuickTime X? (I only have QuickTime 7 Player)

I need to cut an mpeg-4 file into multiple files but I only have QuickTime 7 Player on El Capitan.  I cannot find how to purchase QuickTime 7 Pro but I see posts that QuickTime X is included in El Capitan, which would allow me to cut mpeg files similar as QQ 7 Pro.  However I cannot find QT X either, even using Spotlight.  Please give me a hint as to where QuickTime X on El Capitan.  Thank you.

It should be in your Applications folder (it is in mine).

Quicktime Player is v.10.4. You need to download Quicktime 7 separately…

Download QuickTime Player 7 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later

No he said he has Quicktime 7. He has them backwards. I would know, I have it. The Quicktime Player included with El Capitan is 10.4 and as everyone has already mentioned, it's in /Applications.

In the off chance he actually installed Quicktime 7, it would be in the Utilities folder.

Thanks everyone for responding.  This application naming is confusing.  I have QT Player (version 10.4) in my Applications folder but it doesn't allow for video editing.  I also have QT Player 7 (version 7.6.6) in my Utilities folder, which doesn't allow for editing but has "Pro" in some of the menu choices.  When I select 'Cut' and click on 'Buy Now' it takes me to a help page (Where to get answers about QuickTime 7 or QuickTime 7 Pro - Apple Support) that doesn't lead to purchasing QT Pro.  But cannot find QT X anywhere.  I appreciate your help on this - Thanks.

I will try and explain. What you are calling "Quicktime X" is the Quicktime Player in your Applications folder. Hence the 10.4 version number. Quicktime 7 was the version before "X" and allowed editing with a "Pro" key. The key was automatic if you had certain Apple apps installed such as Final Cut Studio. You could also purchase a MPEG-2 component which would give you a key. I don't think the add-on is still available and I don't know which apps would give you the "Pro" key now. You'd have to ask Apple.

The new QT Player does offer some editing functions, perhaps these suffice: How to use QuickTime Player - Apple Support

FWIW Robert, I don't think Quicktime 7 Pro offered much in the way of editing features that Quicktime Player doesn't have.

Thanks again for your responses.  The basic editing functions I'm looking for are only available when "Pro" is enabled, which is disabled for me and it doesn't appear that the keys are purchasable.  I didn't want to use iMovie (if I don't have to) or purchase Final Cut (just for this purpose I have).  I'll take 'dialabrain's advice and contact Apple directly.  I'll post back what they say ..

From talking to Apple, the issue is that for QuickTime Player the "Pro" functions have not been made compatible with OS X 10.11 "El Capitan", and the QuickTime team has not decided yet when they will release a compatible version.  So it's either purchase notably more expensive apps such as Final Cut, or downgrade to earlier versions of OS X, or use a third-party app, or just be SOL.  I'll probably try to find a decent 3rd party video editor that isn't an investment - Any recommendations?

Apple Care acknowledged the link provided to those looking for QuickTime "Pro" is not helpful since it just takes you to a page that instructs on how to use it, not where to locate it, nor does it offer any information that it's incompatible with El Capitan.

Thanks Esquared - I didn't fully explore the use of Quicktime Player in my Applications folder since I was focused on using the later version of Quicktime Player 7 in my Utilities folder.  I see now the editing functions that you mentioned when running the older QT Player in Applications.  That looks to be what I need, so I'm thrilled.  I guess I shoulda paid more attention to your response :-).

FWIW, Quicktime Player in the Applications folder is much, much newer than QuickTime Player 7 in the Utilities folder.
