why is my iPhone 4 going directly to messaging and not ringing when someone calls me

I am an elderly lady and have the following problem. I have an iPhone 4 and think the version is iOS 9,2 when sone one rings me my phone does not ring me but goes to messaging. Can some help me sort this out please
