I noticed a USB port on my AppleTV ....but that port is not mentioned anywhere in the User's Guide. It would be wonderful if it could be used, for example, to connect a thumb drive or even an external HD with pictures, which then could be displayed on the connected TV. What can this USB port really be used for? Anyone knows?

You can connect it to a computer to reload the system software. In the specs, it says "for maintenance" or some such. It doesn't support a filesystem. Too bad.

It was used at the factory to load the software. It is used to reload the software by the user if it is corrupted to the point where the unit is inoperable.
It is not intended to be a general purpose port like on computers.
