How do I access my Toshiba external hard drive without formatting it (I don't want to lose my files)? I formatted it on my old mac two years ago but it won't work on my new mac or any other mac. I can see it but it won't work. Is there any way I can access my files without having to format the drive?

You can do an Internet search for data recovery software. Usually there is a 'free' trial that will determine if the software will be successful. If so, then you must pay for it.
You may consider running Disk Utility>First Aid>Repair on the external HDD.
