Start Up Disc is Locked

I have IMac Lion. When I start up it is not seeing my operating system. One of my choices was to re-install Lion - which said it would not erase my files. But when I try to re-install Lion - it says "this disc is locked" - and I can re-install. How can I unlock the disc when I can't start up my computer??

vicki21,

Did you install File Vault on the drive? Also, by locked can you tell us what you mean? Please try to be specific, remember we cannot look over your shoulder and rely on you to draw a picture for us.

You can also try to star in Recovery Partition by holding down Command + R on startup and then using Disk Utility to see check the health of the HD. If you are still running Lion, this indicates your computer is likely 3-5 years old.
