why does itunes on iphone say XXXX downloads remaining and is sucking all of my battery life?

All I want on my iphone is a 100 or so songs from an itunes playlist.

i do not use apple music or my music or icloud or itunes match, but now I have this thousands of songs downloading message on the top of my itunes screen. There seems to be no way to stop this download. Hopefully it is not using my data (this option is turned off under settings > music)
