It's not a stupid question at all ..

Transferring photos from your Mac to an external drive should not delete the photos form your iPhone.

Connect the external drive. When the disk icon appears on the desktop, drag photos to that disk. If the disk does not appear on the desktop, go to Finder > Preferences > General. Make sure External disks is selected.

Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes. Transfer to an external HDD or delete files you no longer want on your MBP.

Do not forget to empty trash. Only then is space allocated for new data.

If you are using iPhoto or Photos on your Mac the first thing you should do is open System Preferences, select the iCloud tab, and click the checkmark next to Photos. You’ll be asked if you want to copy your photos to the Mac. The answer is no. Now you can delete your photos from the computer and it will not affect your photos in the cloud.

If you have the 13” MBA it has an SD card slot. You can purchase alow profile SC Card to expand your storage. These SD cards have a slow write speed but a very good read speed so this is a great place to keep music. Be sure to buy the proper card for your computer model.
