You're right, it was a scam. There is no "virus." Never use any kind of "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software on a Mac for any reason, as it's all worse than useless.

While it's more difficult to install malware or a virus with OS X I believe in always being prepared for the worst case scenario. You don't need to purchase antivirus software unless you need it for a large corporate set-up. For home users there are several good free versions such as Sophos for Home.
