logic board and software licenses

I had to replace my 2008 MacBook Pro's logic board. Since then, every time I start a program for the "first" time, I have to enter my software license information.

Why is that? Is that information stored on the logic board rather than the hard drive? Or do the programs see the board as though it is a different computer?

Some applications verify information from the motherboard as part of their licensing.
