Ipod 5th gen, won't charge.

My ipod touch 5th generation wont charge. The battery died. When I plugged it in to charge, it won't charge. I bought a lightning cable. When I plugged it in, after an hour and a half, it says repeatedly for about 10-15 times, plug into charger. Then it shuts off and doesn't charge and shows a black screen for hours. This happened twice. What solution is there? What should I do? Do I need to change the charging port or carry it to fix? Or can it be fixed without carrying it to be fixed?

Thank you.
