Try this -
Settings - Mails, Contacts, Calendars - <mail account name> - Mail days to sync - if it is the default of 2 weeks - please set it back and see if things change
I Wish it were that easy. I have gone to my account name, where no synching setting seems available, and when I look under "advanced" it is the same thing. This seems to be a recent thing, perhaps with Ios 9.*, as I have always been able to retrieve much older emails in the past.
thanks for trying!
I did some additional research
The number of days to sync is on Exchange accounts only
The number of emails downloaded used to be an option with iOS 6 - it was apparently removed in iOS 7 onwards so no longer available
Sorry I could not be more help
