RE: Time Machine back up
IMac, 2.4GHz, 2GB, 2 GB storage / Mac OS 10.6.8 / I am upgrading software and I am told to back up everything. Is Time Machine back up adequate?

Yes, Time Machine will do. However I keep both a Time MAchine backup and clones. You can use a cloning software like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner.
The advanage of the clone is that it is bootable. The advantage of TM is that it creates recursive backup, so you can restore a file or the entire drive from a certain point in time.
