Does resetting an iPod touch to NEW, erase "game progress"?

I forgot the 4 digit code for Parental Control for an iPod touch 5th gen. I would like to set up parental control, and I understand I have to wipe the device and reset it as new. The problem is my child has extensive "game progress' on the device and he is afraid it will be lost.

Game progress will be lost unless the games maintain progress on a server.

Games that maintain progress on a server are either Game Center games or games that require a user login
