final cut express: using generator shape with composite Overlay, but can't get key points to remember zoom motion

Using Final Cut Express on iMAC 10.11.3: applied a generator clip (Shape) and modified clip with Composite "Overlay." Then, using key points I have the shape following a person in the V1 clip. Works fine until I try to zoom in with the Shape. The motion keys will not remember the changes in zoom.
