It evidently takes up space, so it sounds like an external drive is in order. If it lives in the iTunes folder, that folder can be moved to an external drive. To tell the iTunes app to use that folder, the OP can launch iTunes while pressing the Option key, which will allow selection of the iTunes library on the external drive.
