Why doesn't HealthKit recognize my heart rate monitor?

Last year I got a Wahoo TICKR Heart Rate monitor to use while mountain biking. I use Strava on my iPhone 5S currently with iOS 9.2.1. I haven't had any issues with it at all. Works great! Earlier in the year I started running. I prefer using Nike Plus over Strava for tracking my running. Nike Plus however uses HealthKit for reading heart rate. I have NEVER had HealthKit EVER work with the Wahoo TICKR. It never recognizes it. So the heart rate data never makes it to Nike Plus. How is it that Strava sees the HR monitor yet Apple's own Health Kit won't?? Is here any solution? The Wahoo TICKR is a Bluetooth and ANT+ device. Seems like it should have no problem since Strava sees the device just fine. I'm stumped.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
