I'm running Snow Leopard on a mid-2011 iMac and have Mail version 4.6. Everything has worked for all those years, but a few days ago I lost the ability to view messages in a separate window by double-clicking.
I saw some old threads about this topic, but it looked complicated and a bit scary (repairing permissions, etc) so I prefer to ask here if there might be a simpler answer...

If you go to Mail/Window, do you have more than one window open? If so, try closing all but one.

I tried that earlier, when I had about five windows open (without wanting to).
I closed them all but one - and indeed had trouble figuring out how to do even that - but it doesn't help with the problem I mentioned, that is, I can view messages in the preview pane but not get them in a new window by double-clicking.
What happens if you go Mail/File/Open Message (command - O)?
